Work is underway at the future home of Delgado Community College’s Culinary & Workforce Building.

Landis, serving as Construction Manager for this exciting project at 615 City Park Avenue, is currently working on foundations, rough-in and distribution for underground utilities, and setting anchor bolts to receive new structural steel for the building.

“After a slower start than we originally anticipated due to some value engineering and design modifications, the job is currently up and running and is going to be transforming throughout the various stages and phases of construction in the coming months,” said Kyle Condon, Project Executive and Chief Construction Officer at Landis. “Landis is extremely excited and sharply focused to deliver this project for our clients at Facility Planning and Control and Delgado Community College.”

Located on Delgado’s main campus, this new 40,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will house the college’s Culinary Arts and Industrial Workforce programs. Delgado selected this location following a site assessment performed by Manning Architects that considered future potential growth of the campus.

The Culinary Arts program will include new, fully equipped teaching kitchens, a demonstration kitchen with tiered seating for over 70 students, a multi-purpose dining room that can host student dinners, an outdoor dining patio and classrooms, computer labs, and offices.

The Workforce Training program includes large, flexible open workspaces for the skilled trades training programs of Electrical and Welding. There are three areas of specialization for the Electrical program, which include Commercial Electric, Maritime, and Residential. The Welding areas feature a large indoor workshop with individual welding stations, a CNC cutting machine, a plasma cutter and saws as well as an outdoor area for cutting and grinding.

While there is not a commissioning plan requirement, this project is being designed to LEED sustainability standards.

“Landis is proud to be constructing a facility that will provide students with hands-on education in fields like culinary arts, electrical, and welding,” Condon said. “It’s exciting that our work at Delgado will help to build a pipeline to meaningful employment here in New Orleans and beyond — there may even be some future Landis employees walking those halls.”

Before work began in earnest, Landis held an equipment operation and situational awareness meeting and reviewed proper Personal Protective Equipment for the tasks at hand. Landis extends its gratitude to Oscar from Cordeiro Concrete, who translated the meeting discussions in Spanish to ensure clarity and understanding by all workers.

The Culinary & Workforce Building is being built by Landis for our clients at the LCTCS Facilities Corporation out of Baton Rouge. The Owner’s representative is CSRS, Inc., and the Project Architects are Manning Architects and Mackey Mitchel Architects — A Joint Venture.  To learn more about the architecture and view renderings, visit Manning’s website.
