As 2023 came to an end, Landis marked the retirement of two very long-term employees: HR Manager Cathy Gathman and Accounting Manager Vicky Tubre. To commemorate the occasion and honor their careers with Landis, we sat down with them to discuss treasured memories through the years and hear what’s next for them. These two special ladies will be greatly missed by the entire company. *Although Cathy is retiring from full-time work, she will still be handling subcontractor insurance.
Cathy Gathman, HR Manager
Starting as an overload typist in 1975, then a secretary, later handling subcontractor insurance, then HR, then safety coordination, then office management (some of those at the same time), Cathy Gathman has done it all. She even left Landis for a number of years in between and became a professional chef! She returned in 1995 and has just retired at the end of the year with 32 years of service. Here’s our conversation.
What are some of your most cherished memories?
From all the parties and events we’ve had, and getting to know so many of the employees through the years, we all had so much fun. One of my favorites was the bridal shower we threw for Mrs. Christman in 1979.
What’s next for you?
I will be semi-retired for now handling just the subcontractor insurance remotely from home. In addition to that, being retired will allow us to do more traveling and a lot of projects that I’ve been putting off for years.
Is there anything you’d like to say to Team Landis?
It’s been a wonderful ride. To work with everyone that I’ve worked with through the years has been the greatest joy of being here. I still keep in touch with former employees that moved on years ago! Landis is one big family and just because you leave doesn’t mean you are gone!
Vicky Tubre, Accounting Manager
Vicky Tubre came to Landis in 1987 as an accounting clerk and fully devoted herself to Landis’s accounting world, later becoming Accounting Manager. After 36 consecutive years of service, what a career! Here’s our conversation.
What are some of your most cherished memories?
Following Hurricane Katrina, people were displaced for months and during that time there was a lunch calendar, and two or three people at a time would sign up to serve lunch. Having everyone come together for lunch again, it just drew the company so close during such a hard time; it was unbelievable!
What’s next for you?
A trip to the Virgin Islands! We want to travel. I am also going to try to do things with animals; I love animals and I know of two places already where I can volunteer. And of course, taking care of the grandbabies!
Is there anything you’d like to say to Team Landis?
It’s been a pleasure and honor working with everyone, and an awesome experience for me. The people in accounting I work with have always been exceptional; they are all very hard workers. Everyone at Landis is kind, loving, and quick to jump in when something is needed. I witnessed through the years that if there is a need you or anyone else has, it’s always taken care of. Mr. Landis was awesome too, if he heard a need of an employee, he was fast to jump in and say “Ok, what do they need? Let’s get it to them,” and that remains true. Really everyone at Landis has just been an awesome family to me, I am really going to miss them so it’s bittersweet for me.
Thank you for investing your career into Landis Construction, Cathy & Vicky! We’ve been blessed to work with you for so long and are happy for you that you’ve reached retirement.
