Landis Construction and Pensacola Habitat for Humanity are proud to support Theo’s Construction House, an interactive construction-themed play experience within the Pensacola Children’s Museum’s “Our Town: A Space for All” exhibit.
The larger Our Town exhibit was developed by the University of West Florida Historic Trust and funded through a $100,670 grant from Impact 100 Pensacola Bay Area. Designed to celebrate Pensacola’s history through imaginative play, the exhibit features child-sized versions of local landmarks and historic sites that encourage exploration, creativity and learning.
Among those experiences is Theo’s Construction House, a hands-on space where children can step inside a house under construction, interact with building tools and discover the fundamentals of construction through tactile play.
The attraction is named in honor of Rev. Theophalis May (1927–2006), a renowned Pensacola architect, builder, minister and founder of May’s Construction Company. Throughout his career, May became known for preserving historic structures across Pensacola while also helping create affordable housing opportunities and investing in underserved neighborhoods. His legacy of craftsmanship, service and community building continues to influence Pensacola today.
For Landis Construction, supporting Theo’s Construction House aligned closely with the company’s commitment to education and community engagement.
“Children’s education and future opportunities are incredibly important to us at Landis,” said Casey Capps, Landis Construction’s Pensacola lead. “We intentionally support programs that help children learn, grow and discover new possibilities. Theo’s Construction House gives kids an opportunity to explore construction through hands-on play while introducing them to skills like creativity, teamwork and problem-solving. If that experience sparks an interest in building or creating something of their own, that’s incredibly rewarding.”
The partnership also reflects the shared values of Landis Construction and Pensacola Habitat for Humanity, both organizations dedicated to strengthening communities through building, service and opportunity.
By supporting Theo’s Construction House, the organizations hope to help children better understand how homes, neighborhoods and communities are created while exposing them to potential career pathways within the construction industry and skilled trades.
“Construction is ultimately about building communities and creating spaces where people can thrive,” Capps said. “We’re honored to support an exhibit that celebrates an important Pensacola builder while encouraging children to use their imagination, explore new ideas and see the possibilities that exist for their future.”
Operated by the UWF Historic Trust, the Pensacola Children’s Museum welcomes families from across the region to experience Northwest Florida’s history through interactive exhibits and educational programming. Theo’s Construction House serves as a tribute to one of Pensacola’s most influential builders while helping inspire the next generation of creators, craftsmen and community leaders.
